Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh is one of the senior-most political leaders in the country. He started his political career as a student activist with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President.
He entered politics in 1974, and in 1977, he was elected as an MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
He was elected to Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council in 1988 and became the Education Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1991.

Born on 10th July 1951 in a farmer’s family at village Babhora, Tehasil Chakia, District Varanasi (now district Chandauli) UP, to Shri Rambadan Singh and Srimati Gujarati Devi.
He received his basic education in the village and Subsequently, he completed his MSc Physics from Gorakhpur University UP. He worked as a lecturer of Physics at K.B. Post-Graduate College Mirzapur, UP.

Education
He received his primary education from a local school in his village and secured a master’s degree in physics, acquiring first-division results from Gorakhpur University. From childhood, he was inspired by the ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Career
He entered politics in 1974, and in 1977, he was elected as an MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
He was elected to Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council in 1988 and became the Education Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1991.
In March 1997, when he became state president of the Uttar Pradesh unit of BJP, he provided exemplary leadership by expanding the party base and strengthening the organisation. He played a crucial role in saving the BJP-led Government twice during the political crisis.
In October 2000, he became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state; before that, in November 1999, he became Union Minister of Surface Transport in the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
In 2003, Shri Rajnath Singh became Minister of Agriculture in Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet at Centre.
In 2014, he became Union Minister of Home Affairs in the Shri Narendra Modi government, and in 2019, he was made Raksha Mantri of the country.
Then, in 1975, the National Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi; he vehemently opposed the move. He was arrested in 1975 and was in detention for two years.
Another cause that is close to his heart is the empowerment of women. In 2007, the BJP National President proposed a 33 per cent reservation for women in the party set-up.
As a Home Minister of the country in 2015, he announced 33 per cent of reservations for women in all paramilitary forces, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Marriage/Wife
He married Savitri Singh on 5 June 1971, with whom he has two sons and a daughter. His son Pankaj Singh is a politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly from Noida, Uttar Pradesh from BJP.
